Understanding Your Nervous System
Your nervous system is the master control center of your entire body. When it's regulated, you feel calm, present, and capable of handling life's challenges. When it's dysregulated, everything feels harder.
Here are five common signs that your nervous system might need some attention:
1. You're Always "On"
Do you find it impossible to relax, even when you're supposed to be resting? A nervous system stuck in sympathetic activation (fight-or-flight) keeps your body in a constant state of alertness.
Signs include:
- Racing thoughts at bedtime
- Difficulty sitting still
- Feeling wired but tired
- Startling easily at small sounds
2. You Feel Emotionally Numb
On the flip side, a nervous system in dorsal vagal shutdown (freeze response) can make you feel disconnected from your emotions and the world around you.
Signs include:
- Feeling "flat" or emotionally blank
- Difficulty feeling joy or excitement
- Withdrawing from social connections
- Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
3. Your Body Holds Tension
Chronic muscle tension — especially in the jaw, shoulders, and hips — is a hallmark of nervous system dysregulation. Your body is literally bracing for danger.
4. You Overreact to Small Things
When your nervous system is dysregulated, your window of tolerance shrinks. Things that wouldn't normally bother you suddenly feel overwhelming. A minor inconvenience can trigger a full stress response.
5. You Have Trouble Sleeping
Sleep disturbances are one of the most common signs of a dysregulated nervous system. This can show up as:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Waking up in the middle of the night
- Waking up feeling unrested
- Vivid or disturbing dreams
What You Can Do
The good news is that your nervous system is designed to heal. Here are some simple practices:
- Grounding: Place your feet on the earth and notice the sensation
- Breath work: Try extending your exhale longer than your inhale
- Gentle movement: Walking, stretching, or swaying
- Co-regulation: Spending time with calm, safe beings (including horses!)
Your nervous system learned to protect you. Now it's time to teach it that you're safe.
